The Sam Cary Bar Association (“SCBA”) expresses its deep concern and condemnation with the University of Denver’s recently approved and hosted speaker, Ilya Shapiro. The SCBA also expresses concern over the events leading up to and following Mr. Shapiro’s speaking engagement. The commonality with all of these events is the University’s inability to acknowledge clear hate speech, listen to its students from marginalized backgrounds when they expressed legitimate concerns, and understand how freedom of speech works and how it plays a role in the education of our future community leaders. We call on the University to take proactive steps to assess the needs of the students of color and from other marginalized communities, the impact hate speech has on them and their ability to learn and grow, and ways in which the university can support its entire student community.

The Sam Cary Bar Association was shocked and deeply saddened to hear of the shooting at Club Q in Colorado Springs on Saturday evening. We stand in solidarity with our sister association and mourn the tragic event that killed five, injured at least 25, and affected countless more. The Sam Cary Bar Association does not condone violence, prejudice, or hate against members of the LGBTQ+ community. Our hearts are with those affected by this senseless act as well as with our LGBTQ+ community.

We ask that our members come forward now to take action and support our LGBTQ+ community. Below are links for opportunities to provide and receive support. Finally, please join the vigil this evening honoring Club Q. It will be a time to mourn this devastating event as a community.

The Sam Cary Bar Association Statement Regarding the Mass Shooting in Buffalo, New York:

“Our hearts are tragically broken after receiving the news of the latest act of white supremacist violence in Buffalo, New York this past weekend. We mourn the victims: Celestine Chaney, Roberta Drury, Andre Mackniel, Katherine Massey, Margus D. Morrison, Heyward Patterson, Aaron W. Salter, Geraldine Talley, Ruth Whitfield, and Pearly Young. Today our community sits in grief and extends our love and solidarity to the families and people who will now only have memories of their loved ones. We extend our support to the Black community in Buffalo and we unequivocally state our commitment to action on the legacy of the lives lost.
